A Field Codex

Darkest Wiki

Seventeen heroes, twenty-five bosses, seven dungeons, and the rooms that punish mistakes. Written for players already losing, already consulting — not for anyone still on the trailer.

Red Hook Studios — founded by art director Chris Bourassa and designer Tyler Sigman — built Darkest Dungeon as a study in managed failure. Wayne June's narration turns every death into a line of verse. The game's moral lives in its feedback loop: the torch goes out, stress compounds, virtues flip to afflictions, and the heir makes the call you didn't want to make.

Three expansions widen the condition without diluting it. The Crimson Court adds a courtyard of aristocrats and the Flagellant; The Shieldbreaker adds a woman who dreams the dungeon before she enters it; The Color of Madness turns the farmstead into a waveform that cannot be won, only survived.

The first four bosses you're expected to clear, roughly in the order the Heir meets them. After this the game stops pretending to be fair.
